10/10 plot and story, 1/10 main character. It's so frustrating that this woman is so frustratingly USELESS when it comes to doing what a woman does. The author seems intent on making women seem like they MUST be some independent, strong figure that has no children and takes no marriage, and that men are silly for wanting these things and that the main character would only be burdened by children or a a husband... much like Katsa and Po, the story itself is excellent, but the main characters interactions with the male sex are so unreliably selfish it's a wonder these male characters have not left her to her own devices as she seems to wish. Spoiler: Why in the h would she sterilize herself? She is gaining more control and accepting who and what she is as time crawls on, and instead of character development, you regress. She continues this maddening self pity and hate for being a woman. I understand that the art reflects the artist, but this takes that idea to another level

Prose, occasionally clumsy. Plot, occasionally tropic. Did I still like this book more than Graceling? Very much so. I almost wish less time were given to backstory/history and more time to giving the characters chances to interact with each other, because there are some great personalities in this one. Also, hurrah for female protagonists that are emotionally capable, sensitive, and discerning. And sexual relationships handled with tact! Where was this book when I was 15?
